Exploring Castles
These books are not fiction, but they are here for a reason:
Back in 2020 when we were all gripped by the great covid pandemic it was easy to dream of the day when we would once more be able to enjoy the world outside. I actually made a promise to myself that I was going to travel all round England visiting our beautiful castles and historic sites.
Even though I have lived my whole life in this country, studying and teaching history, still I discovered so much that I did not know. That inspired me to begin a series of staycation guides, so that you and your family will get the most out of your visits.

Exploring the Castles of Kent
The first in a new series.
There have been many books on castles, but this one is intended to be rather different. In recent years a new word has entered the English language, as increasing numbers of people have begun to discover the joys of taking a “Staycation” rather than a foreign holiday. The British Isles enjoy a rich cultural heritage, including many magnificent castles, palaces and stately homes. The most famous of these host thousands of visitors every year, and yet, even in this age of information overload, many of the best attractions are largely undiscovered, tucked away just a few miles off the main road. There is a real danger that we drive or cycle a considerable distance to visit one attraction, but miss out on three or four others in the local area. My aim, therefore, is to offer the reader more options and more information, so as to help visitors get more out of their holidays. I have attempted to include all of the information that visitors might find useful, not only the history and design of the castle itself, but also post codes and road numbers for navigation, routes for tours and details of other things to see and do in the local area. There are even some places where it is possible to spend a few romantic nights actually living as a guest in a castle or to book one as a glittering wedding venue. |
